NOW Foods BetterStevia Review: When Supplement Expertise Meets Natural Sweeteners

NOW Foods brings their 55 years of supplement expertise to the stevia market with their BetterStevia organic powder. At $20 for 4 ounces promising 2,511 servings, the value proposition is compelling. But can a supplement company really compete with dedicated stevia brands? After weeks of extensive testing, I've discovered some surprising truths about when supplement manufacturing expertise meets natural sweetener development.

Product is rated as #3 in category Pure Stevia Extract

Hey stevia friends! Jen with another deep dive. Today, we’re exploring NOW Foods’ BetterStevia powder, a concentrated formula offering an impressive 2,511 servings per 4oz container. At $20, let’s see if this supplement manufacturer’s take on stevia delivers value and quality.

First Impressions

The professional packaging reflects NOW’s supplement background, complete with a proper seal and included measuring scoop. The powder itself is fine and uniform, though the lack of a sweetness conversion chart on the label is noticeable. The organic certification and non-GMO verification add credibility to the offering.

What Sets It Apart?

NOW Foods brings their 50+ years of supplement manufacturing expertise to stevia with some interesting results:

  • USDA Organic certification
  • Included measuring scoop (45mg per serving)
  • Supplement-grade quality controls
  • Family-owned company heritage
  • Maltodextrin for improved dissolution

Real-World Testing

My morning coffee ritual revealed both strengths and limitations. The included scoop makes measuring consistent, though finding the right sweetness level takes experimentation without a conversion chart. The powder dissolves well in hot beverages, likely thanks to the maltodextrin, though some might notice its presence.

Cold beverages showed similar results. While dissolution is good, you’ll want to mix with a small amount of warm water first for best results. The sweetness remains stable and clean, though not quite as pure-tasting as some dedicated stevia brands.

Baking experiments uncovered this product’s main weakness. Despite NOW’s quality manufacturing, the formula simply doesn’t perform well in baked goods, often leaving an off-taste and unreliable sweetness. This is definitely a beverage-focused product.

Value Analysis

At less than a penny per serving, the value proposition is strong for beverage use. The high serving count means one container can last months, even with daily use. However, the baking limitations might require keeping a second stevia product on hand for cooking.

Final Verdict: 7.5/10

NOW BetterStevia powder delivers excellent value for beverage use, backed by solid manufacturing standards. While it falls short in baking applications, its organic certification and included scoop make it a reliable choice for daily drinks.

Tips for Success

Through extensive testing, I’ve found these strategies work best:

  • Start with half a scoop and adjust to taste
  • Mix with warm water first for cold beverages
  • Best for drinks and no-bake recipes
  • Store in a cool, dry place
  • Not recommended for baking

Until next time, keep it sweet and measured!

Customer Reviews:
KAL Stevia, not a very soluble product for easy use.

By D.Nitti “Cojitator”, Reviewed in the United States on November 6, 2016

It had been many years since I have used the KAL stevia, Back then KAL BRAND It as Pure Stevia and not Sure Stevia. That is my first concern. Secondly, after using in a cold a hot beverage, the stevia just clumped up and did not mix well.
I called customer service and was told each batch was different. I have worked in the vitamin manufacturing end and know that this was not a valid answer as raw materials have quality control procedure. I WILL NOT be buying this again because I AM NOT “SURE” about this product and I am looking for a PURE stevia powder.

Strong – but good – stuff

By MM in the United States on January 7, 2012

I need to preface this by saying that I was very, very skeptical of the reviews. After hearing the virtues and potency of stevia, but being too much of a cheapskate to buy the good, concentrated stuff I got by on less-concentrated stevia that I deluded myself into thinking was as strong as it was gonna get. I thought that I just had too much of a sweet tooth, and that was why I was using so many scoops of Trader Joe’s stevia for one serving and why I went through a bottle of Whole Foods brand liquid stevia in 3 weeks.

My main use for stevia is in these large microwave egg cakes for breakfast. I can’t stand the taste of cooked eggs but I am trying to get more protein in me, so I have been mixing up eggs, pumpkin and almond/coconut flour (plus some flavorings and baking powder) and microwaving it into a cake-like thing. I make these at least once a day, if not more. With the Trader Joe’s brand (at $9.99/oz), I was using FIFTEEN scoops to lightly sweeten it, and I was running out fast. I bought this brand because of good reviews (however skeptical I was of its strength) and because the 3.5 oz one is massively cheaper than what I can find anywhere else.

My first couple tries with Kal stevia were busts, because I underestimated its power. It’s hard to go from 15 scoops out of habit to just 3-4! It is really, really strong and the aftertaste when you use too much is absolutely disgusting. But when I followed J. Turmel’s guidelines (1 scoop = approximately 1 tablespoon of sugar) everything worked out a lot nicer and now I don’t even notice an aftertaste in things I previously had (I can add it to my homemade chocolate without problem now, for example). This is an excellent product that will actually last me a while, for once!

IS NOT 100% STEVIA LEAF, IT CONTAINS MALTODEXTRIN

By Kindle Alien, Reviewed in the United States on September 15, 2016

the firs time i bought this item the ingredients listed only “stevia leaf extract”, i was very happy everuithime i put it on berries or coffe or iced t, thinking; How great is this, it’s almost like sugar, delicious and without any insulin spikes, so healthy….. Well, fast-forwarding four or five months, I was ready to order my second bottle, it just happen that I heard a counterfeited version was selling on amazon,so I decided to check google for pic differences to make sure I got the real one, well after one thing lead to another, I ended up in the Kal’s website, -[…]- talked to a very nice lady, who informed me that about three years ago they stopped making the 100% stevia leaf version and added maltodextrin, about 2%, she said, for fluidity. I believe is my responsibility as a consumer to inspect any product I buy, I believe as well that the company, based on the demographic studies know that most of the Kal’s stevia consumers are health-focused or sugar sensitive individuals who are trying to avoid maltodextrin, along with artificial -sugar replacement- products, so in this particular case, the company had the opportunity to put a small warning or sticker on the front label stating that this was a new version and that it contains maltodextrin but decided otherwise.

Very hard to dissolve in water.

By barryr, Reviewed in the United States on October 8, 2024

It’s very hard to dissolve in water, which is the way I use stevia powder. I finally found it would go into solution after several days and some vigorous mixing, but what a mess. Where I first thought I would have to trash the whole bottle, now I’m able to use it. But I won’t buy it again.

How it’s good with competitors

When it comes to stevia powder, concentration and usability create crucial trade-offs. I’ve tested numerous stevia products over the years, and I want to share my experiences comparing NOW’s BetterStevia powder with two popular alternatives: Stevia in the Raw and Enzo. Each takes a different approach to stevia formulation, but NOW’s supplement background and impressive serving count creates an interesting benchmark.

Let’s examine how NOW BetterStevia powder performs in real-world use. I’ll break down the key differences in purity, usability, and value. With their included scoop and organic certification, but inclusion of maltodextrin, NOW presents some interesting compromises. After extensive testing in both beverages and baking, the results reveal where supplement manufacturing expertise both helps and hinders.

NOW BetterStevia vs Stevia in the Raw:
Both brands approach stevia powder differently. While Stevia in the Raw uses dextrose for easy measuring, NOW adds maltodextrin but in smaller amounts, offering more servings per container. NOW’s included scoop helps with measurement, though the lack of a sweetness comparison chart can make conversion tricky. The organic certification and higher concentration justify NOW’s premium pricing for many users, despite its limitations in baking.

NOW BetterStevia vs Enzo:
Comparing these brands highlights different priorities in stevia formulation. Enzo’s pure stevia powder excels in baking and precise measurements, while NOW’s formula prioritizes easy scooping for beverages. The serving count favors NOW (2,511 vs Enzo’s typical 1,000+), though Enzo’s purer formula performs better in complex recipes. For daily beverage use, NOW offers excellent value, but serious bakers might prefer Enzo’s versatility.
